Additional Items to Consider:
As this program emphasizes operative autonomy, any trainee applying should be able to demonstrate their surgical proficiency and ability to operate independently. Additionally, our environment is quite collaborative, and the fellow will be expected to lead the operative team; leadership, teamwork, and effective communication are mandatory. Letters of recommendation should attest to the trainee’s ability to operate independently in both straightforward adult cardiac operations as well as a proficiency in performing redo sternotomies and the accompanying dissection. Further, it should highlight the trainee’s ability to lead the operative team through good communication and teamwork.
The program may request video submission from applicants to include the applicant performing an index adult cardiac case such as a mitral or aortic valve replacement that includes their performance of cannulation and the critical portions of the operation. Applicants will be made aware of this during the match cycle.
